Making Your Laptop Last Much Longer

If you have a laptop that you use every day for a variety of activities, then chances are you probably depend on it quite a lot. Because of that, it’s important to make sure that you are going to be able to make it last as long as possible. It is quite expensive when you have to continually replace your laptop, so making it last a long time turns out to be really important indeed. As it happens, there are a lot of steps you can take to help it do this.

In this post, we are going to look at some of the most effective ways to make your laptop last as long as possible. As long as you follow these, you will find that you get much more out of your laptop and you don’t have to spend on a new one anytime soon.

Keep It Free Of Dust

One thing that can really help to make sure your laptop lasts a long time is to keep it as free of dust as you possibly can. If you can do this, it makes it much less likely that something will go wrong with it. Just having some dust in one or more parts can be enough for a laptop to struggle to work at its optimum, so that is something that you are probably going to want to avoid if at all possible.

As it happens, keeping it free of dust should not be too hard. First of all, use your laptop in a relatively dust-free environment if you can. You should also clean your laptop routinely, perhaps every couple of weeks or so depending on how much dust is in the environment you generally use it in. If you keep the room clean that the laptop is in too, that’s going to help here as well. Finally, you can use a compressed air can to clear out the dust from the vents and other nooks and crannies in the laptop.

When it is clear of dust, it will operate a lot better and be much less likely to fail.

Avoid It Overheating

If you allow your laptop to overheat regularly, that is going to lessen its performance and its lifespan a little each time. So anything you can do to ensure that it does not overheat is absolutely worth your while. There are a few things you can do here in a preventative sense: for instance, make sure that you are not using your laptop on top of a material that will heat it up. Don’t ever charge it on a duvet, for instance, as that might lead to overheating and even, in some cases, a fire.

Beyond that, it’s just about making sure that you don’t overwork your laptop. You might do this by gaming on your laptop for example – most laptops are not meant for this, so if you want to game, you might want to consider getting a PC or a gaming laptop. At least invest in heavier specs if that is what you need, so your computer can cope a lot better with what you are putting it through.

Keep The Hard Drive Clear

As far as possible, you should always aim to have a clear hard drive on your computer. This is one of the easiest and simplest things you can do to ensure that you are keeping your laptop working at its full capacity, and you might be surprised how much it helps you in ensuring that you are making the machine last as long as possible. There are many tips you can follow to ensure that your laptop lasts a long time, so make sure that you are doing this by keeping the hard drive as clear as you can. Having it run faster is another great side effect of this that you will probably enjoy.

Look After The Battery

The one part of the laptop that is most likely to suffer damage is the battery, and you need to do all you can to take proper care of it. Most people do not really understand how to look after their batteries properly, but it’s actually pretty simple as long as you follow a few basic ideas. First of all, you should always plug in your computer for any particularly heavy tasks, as this stops the battery overheating. Secondly, once the battery is charged in normal use, keep it plugged in – despite what people think, this actually helps because the laptop is merely being run off the mains, not using the battery at all. And when it gets to ten percent battery remaining, shut it down and charge it to full before using it again.

Be Careful With Sunlight

Ideally you should never put your laptop in direct sunlight. This causes it to overheat, but it may also warp some of the parts, and that can cause some serious problems for the machine that can be very expensive to fix. If it is in the sunlight for a moment that won’t really matter, but avoid regularly keeping it somewhere the sun gets on it, especially if you live somewhere quite hot. Over time this will degrade the laptop and the performance will suffer, and you’ll find that you have to replace it much sooner. You will get a lot more out of any machine by keeping it out of the light as much as you can.

Don’t Drop It

Some people seem to think that you can just drop a laptop regularly and it won’t matter all that much. But even just a few drops can cause a lot of trouble for it, and it is something that you will want to avoid doing as best as you can. Make sure that you always carry it with care, and that you are never doing anything to make it likely to fall – such as keeping it on the edge of a high surface for example.
